CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Damage Control

“This was uncalled for!” Clint was furious. His face was flushed and his eyes were bright with anger. “I know you leaked these falsified stories so don’t even bother denying it.”

“I did not,” Steven spread his hands, “You told me explicitly not to get involved in your personal life and I didn’t. You want to date that plain Jane, go ahead.”

“I can’t now, can I?” Clint snapped. “She won’t take my calls or answer any of my messages.”

“What?” Steven said feigning concern. “That’s insane. What’s wrong with her?”

“She’s obviously hurt,” Clint was losing steam. “You think you’re the first person to call her all those nasty things, that she isn’t aware of what she looks like? She knows what everybody thinks and she’s strong enough to not care for ignorant opinions.”

“Well, you’d think she’d clean up her act a bit,” Steven muttered but shut up when he saw the murderous look Clint gave him. “I’ll call up those people at E! and ask for their sources. I’ll deny the whole thing and work on fixing the problem.”

“I don’t know if that will make much of a difference,” Clint said gloomily staring at his phone.

“It will stop it from getting worse,” Steven said, patting Clint on the back. “You should start getting ready for tonight.”

“I don’t feel like going,” Clint fingered a Sorting Hat player piece. The board had been set for three days now but Courtney hadn’t come to play. He missed her terribly.

“It’ll help dissuade the rumors,” Steven said thinking quickly. “When you show up without a date it will send the message that you aren’t dating anyone and the whole lie about you dating all these women will unravel.”

Clint thought about it and decided it was worth a shot. He nodded.

“Excellent,” Steven rubbed his palms together. “I’ll see you tonight then.”

Clint heard the front door slam shut. He picked up his phone and typed his hundredth message to Courtney.

‘The Sorting Hat and I miss you.’

He pressed send then took a picture of the Hat and sent that as well, hoping she’d find it funny and reply. No such luck. He sighed and headed for the showers. Her absence from his life made him realize just how much he’d fallen for her over the past few weeks he’d known her. He thought of things in terms of what Courtney would think of them. Would she like this shirt on me? Would she watch this show? Which book would she read next? What would she think of this character, this plot twist, this passage, this poem?

Clint was hooked and he didn’t mind at all. Now if only she’d reply to his messages, he could work his way back into her good graces.
